Charters are run for profit across the United States. Often for-profit organizations help form nonprofits to apply for a charter school license. In turn, the nonprofits enter into contracts with the for-profit organization to run the school. The Network for Public Education found that over 30% of Arizona’s charter schools are run for profit.

In 2023, the U.S. Treasury Department released a report on the benefits of unions to the U.S. Economy. The report details how unionization has improved middle class wages, closed gender- and race-based wage gaps, and increased civic engagement.

Arizona is experiencing a school closure epidemic, which is negatively impacting student outcomes. Since 1998, charter school closures in Arizona have displaced more than 80,000 students (Network for Public Education 2024).

Our communities deserve stable schools that are transparently operated and community-driven.

Countless American schools have terrible working and learning conditions. We all know teachers who have to work additional jobs to make ends meet. Teachers are leaving the classroom for better compensation and working conditions, and fewer people are pursuing careers in education.
